The world of Ni No Kuni is considered to be a polar opposite of a real-world version of Earth (the Ichi no Kuni). Different species of creatures and humans exist in this realm, ranging from the cat-like Grimalkin to Dogfolk and even sentient robots. Most of the world is full of wild creatures (slimes, wyverns, fairies) and landscapes (vast deserts, frozen tundras), but 5 major kingdoms exist in the realm. Magic is also a common power to have in this world, along with your typical fantasy-style weaponry (spears, swords, bows). The biggest difference between the first Ni No Kuni game and the second is the introduction of the kingmakers, celestial beings who forge Kingsbonds with the rulers of the world, granting the power to rule.

Personality:

Tani is described to be a feisty rebellious child, who also has a soft spot towards helping people. As a baby, she was raised by a group of sky pirates, her adoptive father Batu being the leader of the Sky Pirate gang. Instead of focusing on plundering or harming innocent travelers, she’s always been the pirate with a head on her shoulders. When Evan and Roland are captured, she reassures them that Batu will be merciful and even goes so far as to scold their captors for being eager to take someone else’s life.

She enjoys the challenge of any given situation and is able to adapt to any necessary role as needed. When she joins Evan’s kingdom and party, her mischievous side comes out in full force. While in the city of Goldpaw, she’s not afraid to pilfer a set of rigged casino dice in order to prove that cheating is occurring in the kingdom. And in order to gain an audience with the Queen of Hydropolis, she even acts out a marriage proposal scene with Evan, playfully teasing him and also being willing to dress up for the part. In-game texts describe her as liking cute things (puppies, dresses) despite her tough sky pirate appearance, so she definitely has a soft heart underneath her tough demeanor.

Tani is shown to have a caring heart towards people and creatures in need, even if she has a problem with monsters in the past. During one of Ni No Kuni 2’s sidequests, we see that Tani goes to great lengths to help find the monster of an abandoned egg. The egg ends up belonging to a Wyvern, which is a creature that Tani was kidnapped by early on in the game. She’s forced to reconcile her feelings towards that species of creature and learns that she wouldn’t want any child or creature to feel alone. This reveals her fear of being abandoned, as when she was a baby, her mother was killed by bandits, leaving her scared and alone.


Key themes: Adventure and Companionship.

Main Motivation: Helping Evan build his kingdom, and by proxy, helping people in trouble. Stopping her homeworld from being destroyed by an evil ex-king / invading nightmares/monsters is also a big motivator for her actions.

Skills: Since Tani comes from a world of magic, she knows a diverse amount of spells focusing on wind and electric magic, along with some other supportive skills.

Tani’s in-game skills are the following:

Plunder - A skill in which Tani attempts to steal an item off her selected target. The skill itself does no damage.
Burrowing Bolt - Tani fires off a powerful arrow from her bow which has a chance of stunning the target
Windwhirl - Tani swings her spear in a circular pattern, creating strong slashes of wind that can hit multiple targets
Hail of Arrows - Tani fires her bow into the air, which causes a large volley of arrows to descend on a designated area.
Bird’s Eye Bolt - Tani fired off an arrow with breaks off into multiple beams of light, homing in on a single target
Spark Spike - A single spark of lightning magic is sent off towards one available target
Spark Shower - Multiple lightning bolts are called down from the sky, damaging any foes within the radius of the attack
Lifeline - A skill that revives any unconscious party members with a small amount of health

In addition, Tani is very proficient in wielding spears and bows. Her in-game animations show that she’s so skilled with a bow that she can fire off volleys of arrows while performing aerial flips. Years of living with the sky pirates have trained her for battle: she’s the fastest attacker in Evan’s party, but the trade-off is having the lowest HP / Defense stats.

She also has a specialty skill in the Evermore kingdom where she can increase productivity within mining camps.

Item: Tani will be arriving on the train with her Arms Band. It’s a bag of holding based item which allows three spears and one bow to be equipped to it. She’ll have the following set to it:

Notes: Ni No Kuni 2 allows for only four skills to be equipped at a time, so I’m mainly wondering if Tani will be restricted to 4 skills or have access to all of them.

Also, be prepared for the consistent question of ‘can I steal this’? She’ll try to do it when the situation calls for it. :)
